His narration illustrates the reality of poverty in the country, laying the ground for intervention. Due to the nature of his research, Orwell presented a clear understanding of his subject matter by relating his observations with experiences (Amundsen 2016). Additionally, Orwell considered himself is an ethnographer seeking truth through experiencing afflictions with other people, in this case, the coal miners. The author identifies the difficulty encountered in trying to maintain hygiene without water or even a toilet. Additionally, the author sympathetically analyses the living conditions of women and children loitering in shacks and hurdling in tiny rooms. Orwell watches as families without any income struggle to find scraps of coals from dumping grounds (Mcdonald 2016). He documents his experiences and those of the working class. Orwells’ investigation leads him to live among the poor for some time.

The rights for women therefore were largely overlooked, however there remained a strong number of individuals who wrote for and advocated for the rights of women. However, these debates and ideas were mostly genderless, and most ideas of the time demanded for the rights of man but asked very little for the change of social standing of women in society. Most thinkers, philosophers, and writers of the time proposed new ideas on human nature and the rights and laws of citizens. I believe that these ideas were as revolutionary, if not more revolutionary, than any battles or wars fought during the same time period. The French Revolution (1789-1798) was a period not only of great conflict, upheaval and war, but also of great ideas. We caught up with Hall to ask her about her love of food, what it’s like to see Vice President Kamala Harris take office, and much more. Violet Made of Thorns has been circling around on BookTok, and was chosen as Barnes & Noble’s YA Book Club Pick.ĭue to these two factors, this book has become a highly anticipated bestseller that many readers are raving about. Only secrets and schemes and spider-fingered kings“ Violet made of thorns “ There are no love stories found upon the throne. Violet’s wits may protect her in the cutthroat court, but they can’t change her fate. Publisher: Delacorte Press They clearly cared about each other, but Cassia struggled with that and tried to push away her feelings because she knew it would be a problem with her royal status. I also liked getting to see their relationship more. Kane was easy to like from the start though. To be honest, it was hard to really like Cassia for a while because of how she was treating Kane, but she was still a well-written character, and I came around to liking her in the end. I thought I would miss having Solara and Doran as main characters, but I ended up liking Kane and Cassia. And it did end up being another gripping story. This book was pretty different from the first, not quite the same fun, adventure-y feel, but it was still good! I got more into it as it went on and moved away from Cassia’s royal political issues and back to space adventures. Their quick friendship soon evolves into a strong sexual and emotional unionone that they fear may eventually cost them their lives. They meet as teenagers hired to herd sheep on Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming. The story chronicles the relationship between Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, two men who develop a deep love for each other but who are forced to live separate lives in an intolerant world. When the reviews of Close Range appeared, ∻rokeback Mountain was consistently singled out for its evocative detail and compelling narrative. Recognizing that it was the strongest story in her collection, Proulx placed it at the end of the book. It also appeared in the 1998 edition of The O. It was first published in the New Yorker in 1998 and subsequently won the magazine's award for fiction that year. Annie Proulx's short story ∻rokeback Mountain gained a great deal of attention before it was collected into her Close Range: Wyoming Stories in 1999. A few rich metaphors-rivers, pottery, breath-are woven throughout the story, as every encounter redraws the blurry lines between childishness and maturity, truth and lies, secrecy and honesty, magic and madness. From Zach’s bitter relationship with his father to Anna’s chafing at her overprotective grandmother to Poppy’s resignation with her ramshackle relations, Black skillfully sketches their varied backgrounds and unique contributions to their relationship. As they travel by bus and boat (with a fateful stop at the public library), the ghost seems to take charge of their journey-and the distinctions between fantasy and reality, between play and obligation, begin to dissolve.Veteran Black packs both heft and depth into a deceptively simple (and convincingly uncanny) narrative. Poppy begs him to join her and Alice on one last adventure: a road trip to bring peace to the ghost possessing her antique porcelain doll. But now they are 12, and their interests are changing along with their bodies when Zach’s father trashes his action figures and commands him to “grow up,” Zach abruptly quits the game. The lifelong friendship of Zach, Poppy and Alice revolves around their joint creation, an epic role-playing saga of pirates and perils, queens and quests. A middle-grade fantasy dons the cloak of a creepy ghost tale to deliver bittersweet meditations on the nature of friendship, the price of growing up and the power of storytelling.
